Music

Through Music boys are encouraged to extend and express themselves, discovering personal confidence from which they can flourish in life.

The Music program at the College consists of three areas; academic, instrumental and vocal tuition and co-curricular ensemble groups. These include, Orchestra, Big Band, Vocal Ensemble, Chapel Choir, Jazz Combo, Senior Fusion Band and a number of other groups. A similar program is developed at the Preparatory School and includes choral groups, strings program and instrumental ensembles. A musical production is staged every year in conjunction with local girls' schools.

The Scots College Music Department has fully embraced all aspects of Integration of Technology in the Curriculum. In our Music Department, this means all Music Work Books are specifically tailored to suit the needs of Scots boys in various years. These books are tied to the online content on Pipeline and can be edited, added to and the content refined for each edition.

The Music Department also incorporates specific music software in which students can compose their own music in virtually any style, with the option of including video and multimedia content. These programs provide all the scope necessary for our most gifted and talented students.

The Arts

"All children are born artists." Picasso

Scots' Visual Arts program nurtures creativity, unpredictability, nonconformity and provides an environment where we try to develop the boys' access to the gifts of the human imagination. Creativity is just as important as literacy and numeracy.

The environment that students work in has no mistakes; it is where the boys construct examples based on trial and error, move from one medium to another and challenge conceptual outcomes.

Creativity has often been very much stigmatised as a component of education but it is based on very strict academic rigours of long hours and hard work. No matter from what discipline or from which walk of life they were from, all the great creative thinkers were once children. Keeping creativity alive is a very important part of learning at The Scots College.

Performing Arts

Scots' Drama program offers boys an opportunity to express themselves through drama, play and musical productions and speech and drama tutorials.

The program has a strong emphasis on getting every boy to communicate clearly, expressively and imaginatively; we want to develop boys who can use their body, voice and mind to convey their ideas with colour and passion.

Our drama program is inclusive of every boy and as they progress through the College there are increasing opportunities for boys to specialise and concentrate on areas that are of particular interest to them.
