Scots boys ready to battle it out on the Rugby field in the name of social justice
The Scots College's 1 st XV Rugby team is once again preparing for battle in support of the homeless as the annual Oasis Cup draws near. Commonly known as the 'Battle of the Hill', the Oasis Cup is a highlight on the rugby event calendars of Scots and their opponent, Cranbrook School.
The Oasis Cup will take place on Saturday, 17 July at Cranbrook School.
The Scots College has taken the cause to heart with the school recently raising $14,000 for Oasis through the Harbour Bridge Run; facilitating class discussions around The Oasis documentary and lessons linking to social justice. The College also hosted a forum with other schools, and raised $4,000 in last year's Oasis Cup.
"We place great emphasis on 'giving back'. Scots boys are blessed with opportunities and skills that many young people on the street may never experience. They feel a great sense of gratitude for all that they have, and enjoy harnessing their talents to serve the community," Dr Ian PM Lambert, Principal of The Scots College said.
"The Scots College encourages compassion for and an awareness of those less fortunate than ourselves and the struggles faced by those in need in the community."
In true 'Battle of the Hill' tradition, Scots and Cranbrook parents will be baking for the event, with proceeds to be donated to Oasis in continued support for the staff and volunteer support of homeless and disadvantaged young people through programs that will provide skills and support necessary to rebuild their lives.
On any given night 100,000 Australians are homeless, with more than one third of homeless people being teenagers and young adults aged 12-24. Oasis provides accommodation and food to more than 100 homeless young people each night, and faces major challenges to maintain existing programs, as the demand for this service is consistently rising.
